Robotic Driving System Overview

The system consists of a vehicle-side robotic kit and the user-side software for creating and executing specific test courses.

On the vehicle-side, the primary system is the Vehicle Automation Kit, which includes actuators, electronics, and software for controlling the steering, throttle, brakes, transmission, and other ancillary functions of the vehicle to allow it to drive a test course as desired by proving ground personnel.  This kit ties in with existing OBD II and CAN systems, as well as 3rd party data loggers, for gathering vehicle data during testing as desired.  A software-independent, redundantly-powered, Emergency Stop (E-Stop) system ensures fail-safe operations.

Integrated with this Vehicle Automation Kit are:

  • A GPS/IMU positioning system
  • Obstacle detection/avoidance sensors (optional)

On the user-side, the Mobius mission planning software allows an operator to command multiple vehicles to perform a variety of tasks simultaneously.

The system is all tied together with a site-specific radio network and a separate system for real-time on-board video.
